Experiments on snap buckling, hysteresis and loop formation in twisted rods

چکیده
We give results of large deflection experiments involving the bending and twisting of 1 mm diameter nickel-titanium alloy rods, up to 2 m in length. These results are compared to calculations based on the Cosserat theory of rods. Details of this theory, formulated as a boundary value problem are presented. The mathematical boundary conditions model the experimental set up. The rods are clamped in aligned chucks and the experiments are carried out under rigid loading conditions. An experiment proceeds by either twisting the ends of the rod by a certain amount and then adjusting the slack, or fixing the slack and varying the amount of twist. In this way commonly encountered phenomena such as snap buckling, the formation of loops, and buckling into and out of planar configurations are investigated. The effect of gravity is discussed.

Optical Chirality Enhancement in Twisted Arrays of Plasmonic Nano-rods
An important property of electromagnetic fields, which arises from the interaction between fields and chiral molecules, is called optical chirality. By enhancing this field property, while maintaining constant input power, we are able to increase absorption of circularly polarized light by chiral molecules of a certain handedness. This enhancement is achieved through the use of achiral plasmoni...
متن کاملA Strain Range Dependent Cyclic Plasticity Model
Hysteresis loop curves are highly important for numerical simulations of materials deformation under cyclic loadings. The models mainly take account of only the tensile half of the stabilized cycle in hysteresis loop for identification of the constants which don’t vary with accumulation of plastic strain and strain range of the hysteresis loop. This approach may be quite erroneous particularly ...
متن کاملLocalisation, looping and pop-out in rod-like structures
Long slender structures such as textile yarns and ocean cables show localised buckling behaviour under torsional loading. In a 1D elastic theory these localised solutions are described by homoclinic orbits in a dynamical system in which arclength along the structure is the independent variable. Upon continued loading after localisation a snap into self-contact and looping may occur. We discuss ...
متن کاملBuckling of rods with spontaneous twist and curvature
We analyze stability of a thin inextensible elastic rod which has non-vanishing spontaneous generalized torsions in its stress-free state. Two classical problems are studied, both involving spontaneously twisted rods: a rectilinear rod compressed by axial forces, and a planar circular ring subjected to uniform radial pressure on its outer perimeter. It is demonstrated that while spontaneous twi...
متن کاملCompetition between curls and plectonemes near the buckling transition of stretched supercoiled DNA.
Recent single-molecule experiments have observed that formation of a plectonemically supercoiled region in a stretched, twisted DNA proceeds via abrupt formation of a small plectonemic "bubble." A detailed mesoscopic model is presented for the formation of plectonemic domains, including their positional entropy, and the influence of small chiral loops or "curls" along the extended DNA. Curls be...
